Cannabis Tips for Newbies: What We Wish We Knew Before Our First Experience

A young brunette woman in a bright green sweater, confused about cannabis.

Let's be honest—stepping into a dispensary for the first time can feel a little like walking into a secret society. There's the lingo. The labels. The seemingly endless rows of flower, edibles, pre-rolls, vapes, concentrates, and "wait, what even is a live resin gummy?"

If you're new to cannabis, welcome. At Northstar Dispensary in West Yellowstone, we've met plenty of first-timers, and we've been there ourselves. Whether you're here on vacation, easing into cannabis for the first time, or circling back after a long break—we've got your back.

Here's the advice we wish someone had given us when we were just getting started:

Start Low, Go Slow

This is the golden rule—especially with edibles.

Pro tip:

  • If the package says 10mg THC, start with half (5mg) or less

  • Wait at least 90 minutes before deciding to take more

  • You can always take more later, but you can't undo it

Everyone's Body Is Different

Just because something hits your friend a certain way doesn't mean it'll hit you the same.

What to keep in mind:

  • Your tolerance, metabolism, and mood all play a role

  • It's okay if your experience is different—that's normal

Cannabis Tips for Newbies: Ask Questions—Seriously

There are no dumb questions here. Our budtenders are friendly and knowledgeable, and they take great pleasure in helping people become comfortable with cannabis.

You can ask about:

  • Product types (what's the difference between a pre-roll and a vape?)

  • Effects (will this make me sleepy or social?)

  • How to use something (yes, we'll show you how a vape pen works)

Set the Scene

Your first time trying cannabis should be chill and comfortable.

Tips for a good first experience:

  • Choose a safe space with low-pressure

  • Surround yourself with people you trust

  • Plan for a relaxing evening—not errands or social obligations

It Doesn't Have to Be About Getting "High"

Not everyone uses cannabis to get stoned. You might be here for better sleep, relaxation, or possible pain relief.

Ask about:

  • Low-THC or balanced THC:CBD products

  • Microdose edibles or calming tinctures

  • Daytime-friendly strains that won't leave you foggy

Hydrate, Munch, Repeat

Cannabis can cause dry mouth (aka cottonmouth), and yes—the munchies are real.

Plan ahead with:

  • Plenty of water

  • Easy, comforting snacks

  • Foods you won't regret later (maybe don't go full gas station binge)

Respect the Plant (and Yourself)

Cannabis is meant to enhance—not overwhelm. Don't feel pressured to overdo it.

Remember:

  • Less is more

  • Trust how you feel, not what others are doing

  • Be kind to your body and take your time

Come Back With Questions

If your first experience wasn't perfect—no problem. We love helping people refine and adjust until they find what works.

When you come back, tell us:

  • What you tried

  • How it felt

  • What you're curious about next time
